Multiple public and private organizations came together to repurpose an old JC Penney store that anchored a downtown shopping mall. After four years of vacancy, leaders determined that a multi-purpose arena could meet many needs of the community.
The facility would be able to host events that previously could not occur in Mason City, and includes energy and water saving features such as dual flush toilets, occupancy lighting sensors, LED scoreboards and lighting, tankless water heaters, solar panels and more.
It kicks off reuse of surrounding existing built infrastructure, and is located in a way that encourages walking, biking, and mass transit, revitalizes the area’s businesses as well as the community’s sense of place and pride.
