Annual Meeting Agenda Completed The complete agenda for the Annual Meeting is now available. Annual Meeting to be held July 28 in Mount Vernon Join us in historic Mount Vernon for the 2007 1000 Friends of Iowa Annual Meeting. The annual meeting will be held in the Cornell Commons in the heart of campus. This year's keynote speaker will be Thom Guzman, Director of the Iowa Downtown Resource Center at the Iowa Department of Economic Development. The day's events will include the 2007 Best Development Awards, Reports from Around the State, and panels and breakout sessions covering topics including urban sprawl, sustainability in development decisions, and local codes to enable smart growth. The meeting will conclude with a walking tour of historic Mount Vernon. Click here for more information. Best Development Award Nomination Due by July 9 Nominations for 1000 Friend's Annual Best Development Awards are due July 9. The Awards recognize development projects that reflect smart growth principles and demonstrate commitment to 1000 Friend's core principle. More information can be found here. Website Update We appreciate your patience as we continue to work on the new site. We've Moved 1000 Friends of Iowa has completed the move to our bigger offices at Merle Hay Tower in Des Moines. Our address/phone/email are the same, only our suite number has changed from 309 to 605. The Smart Growth Audit: Wind Behind our Sail for Change On a snowy day with subzero temperatures, over one hundred people braved the weather to attend a workshop and open house at the Des Moines Botanical Center to learn and discuss the results of the Des Moines Metropolitan Area Smart Growth Audit. The report was the culmination of a project led by 1000 Friends of Iowa and funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency which examined the local codes of cities within the Des Moines Metropolitan Area and evaluated whether those codes allow for smart growth development practices. Gary Taylor, of Iowa State University Extension, and Graduate Extension Specialist Lucy Wilkinson completed the study and produced the final report. Ray Drive, from 4:00-8:00 pm. The results of a study recently completed by Iowa State University Extension, the Des Moines Metropolitan Area Smart Growth Audit, will be discussed.
